Nvidia Chief Executive Officer Jensen Huang said new laws or regulations are not needed for artificial intelligence safety, arguing that market self-discipline can ensure both safety and the pace of development.

Bloomberg reported on September 15 that Huang, speaking at a Salesforce event, said “no new laws” and “no new regulations” are needed. He also rejected the idea that companies must choose between developing AI quickly and developing it safely, calling it a false choice.

Huang said it is entirely possible to achieve both at the same time. Companies can slow development on their own until they are confident a product is safe enough to bring to market, he said, adding that such market pressure is already at work.

Debate has recently intensified across the AI industry over the pace of advanced AI development. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei argued in a recent lengthy essay that AI development should slow, and a former Anthropic researcher also warned that AI could pose a threat to humanity.

While agreeing on the importance of AI safety, Huang framed it as a technical issue rather than a regulatory one. “Safety is incredibly important and, in many ways, the highest priority,” he said. “Safety is an engineering problem.”

He added that if companies reach a point where they can no longer control a product or ensure its safety, they should pause development and make sure it works properly.
