OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, is in early talks to raise fresh funding at a valuation of more than $1.2 trillion, Bloomberg reported on Sept. 15.

The company is discussing a new financing plan with investors. The talks were initiated by investors, and whether a deal is completed will depend on the timing of OpenAI’s initial public offering.

Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman recently told Fortune that OpenAI still plans to pursue an IPO, but not this year. He added that the company is more likely to go public after 2027.

If the fundraising goes ahead, OpenAI’s valuation would surpass that of rival Anthropic. Anthropic raised money in May at a $965 billion valuation, including the new capital.

The Financial Times reported that the funding round could give OpenAI’s existing long-term investors a chance to increase their stakes ahead of the IPO.

Anthropic is also preparing for an IPO. It has chosen Nasdaq for the listing and could go public as early as October, the report said.
