Apple, Nvidia, Microsoft and OpenAI Chiefs to Attend White House State Dinner for Xi

Apple, Nvidia, Microsoft and OpenAI are among the leading US technology companies whose top executives will attend the White House state dinner being held during Chinese President Xi Jinping’s state visit.

Bloomberg reported on September 21 that Microsoft Chief Executive Officer Satya Nadella and Apple Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook are set to attend the state dinner at the White House on September 24.

Executives from major artificial intelligence companies will also be there. Nvidia Chief Executive Officer Jensen Huang and OpenAI Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman plan to attend, while Qualcomm Chief Executive Officer Cristiano Amon is also on the guest list. Microsoft declined to comment on whether Nadella would attend.

The gathering of top US technology executives is also drawing attention to the AI development race between the US and China. It comes as debate intensifies within the US tech industry over the pace of AI development and safety regulation.

Anthropic Chief Executive Officer Dario Amodei recently cited risks AI could pose, including large-scale cyberattacks, and argued that the industry should slow the pace of development.

By contrast, the Trump administration has said the US could cede a competitive advantage to China if it slows AI development or adopts additional regulation. China has likewise criticized calls to slow AI development as fearmongering.

As Washington and Beijing begin treating AI as a separate agenda item ahead of a summit between their leaders, the broad attendance of US tech chiefs at Xi’s state dinner is set to draw fresh attention to ties between the two countries in the technology sector.
