Trump to Host White House Lunch With Nvidia, Anthropic CEOs on AI Safety

President Donald Trump will meet executives from major artificial intelligence companies including Nvidia and Anthropic to discuss AI safety.

Bloomberg reported on September 28 that Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson are set to host a lunch on September 29 for AI industry executives. Attendees are expected to include Nvidia Chief Executive Officer Jensen Huang, Anthropic Chief Executive Officer Dario Amodei, Palantir Chief Executive Officer Alex Karp and OpenAI President Greg Brockman.

The meeting comes as concern grows that AI technology could pose a threat to humans. Amodei and some other industry figures have argued that AI development should be slowed to ensure safety.

Amodei separately met Trump late on September 27. He then visited Capitol Hill on September 28 and met Senate Republican Leader John Thune. Amodei declined to answer reporters' questions about his discussion with Trump, and neither the White House nor Anthropic disclosed details of the talks.

Congress is also continuing discussions on legislation aimed at ensuring AI safety. Earlier this month, Johnson said Congress may need safeguards in response to warnings raised within the AI industry. He added that it could take considerable time to craft legislation capable of winning broad support.

In the House, lawmakers have proposed a bill that would require developers to build mechanisms to forcibly shut down AI systems that spiral out of control, along with a bipartisan measure calling for independent safety reviews of advanced AI models. In the Senate, independent Senator Bernie Sanders has put forward a proposal to ban the development of superintelligent AI that could escape human control.

Still, related legislation is unlikely to advance quickly. The House has already adjourned and will not resume its schedule until after the November midterm elections, while the Senate is also set to begin a pre-election recess later this week.
