Iran is bolstering defenses around its nuclear facilities in preparation for a possible military clash with the US after the November midterm elections, The Wall Street Journal reported on October 13.
Iranian officials warned that they would expand any military response across the Middle East if the US launches further attacks, the Journal said. Some officials also signaled the possibility of deploying ground troops to neighboring countries to deter additional US strikes.
Iran has strengthened its defenses by erecting temporary earthen berms around key nuclear sites, including Natanz. It has also identified potential targets including data centers and undersea internet cables in the United Arab Emirates, as well as oil facilities in Saudi Arabia, according to the report.
The US has also increased its military presence in the region, deploying a third aircraft carrier strike group and additional Marine forces. President Donald Trump has ruled out an attack before the midterm elections, while leaving open the possibility of further strikes on Iran's nuclear facilities.
