Trump wrote on Truth Social on Oct. 14 that “large-scale oil, gas and mineral exploration is getting ready to begin in our new and beautiful Greenland.”
He also highlighted Greenland’s resource potential, claiming some experts say the amount of easily extractable oil there is far greater than in almost any other part of the world. He did not disclose specific reserve estimates, an exploration timeline or development plans.
Trump also emphasized Greenland’s role in U.S. and European security, saying its strategic value in defense and offensive terms could not be compared with any other region.
He added that any future attack on the U.S. would have to pass through Greenland and claimed defense systems there could shoot down drones, missiles and even weapons that have not yet been developed.
Trump also described Greenland’s geographic position as advantageous for military response, saying it would provide the time, space and visibility needed to detect threats early and respond.
