Mastercard has introduced a security solution designed to detect financial-crime risks such as fraud and money laundering before stablecoin payments are completed.
Cointelegraph reported on October 19 that Mastercard unveiled Stablecoin Security, a transaction-risk analysis tool for stablecoin transfers, at the Money20/20 USA conference in the US. The company selected Borderless.xyz and Keyrails as its initial partners as it aims for a global commercial rollout next year.
The product combines traditional payments data with blockchain analytics to assess a transaction's risk level before settlement. It analyzes potential fraudulent activity and possible sanctions violations, helping financial institutions identify suspicious transfers in advance.
Stablecoins can move across multiple blockchains and wallets, making fund flows harder to trace than in conventional payment systems. Because on-chain transactions are difficult to recover once executed, pre-transaction risk detection is especially important. Mastercard plans to assign a risk score to each transaction so banks and other institutions can identify transfers that require additional review.
The launch is part of Mastercard's broader push into stablecoins. In August, Mastercard acquired stablecoin payments infrastructure firm BVNK for $1.8 billion. More recently, it also announced Global Money Platform, a product aimed at helping companies use stablecoins for payments.
Stablecoin supply growth has slowed this year, but transaction volumes have risen quickly, driven by remittances and cross-border payments. In a recent report, Standard Chartered said the global stablecoin market could grow to $2 trillion by 2030, though at a slower pace than previously expected.
