An early Ethereum investor has moved part of a holding kept for about 11 years, drawing attention to a potential sale.

On October 26, on-chain analyst EmberCN said a whale that participated in Ethereum’s 2015 initial coin offering transferred a total of 5,000 ETH to an external wallet over the past two hours.

The investor bought 100,000 ETH in the 2015 ICO at $0.311 apiece. The total investment came to about $31,000, making the buyer one of the large early holders around Ethereum’s launch. The investor later sold half of that position, or 50,000 ETH, in 2016 at $5.47 each. That sale was worth about $274,000, a return of roughly 17 times the purchase price.

The remaining 50,000 ETH appears to have been held for about 11 years without notable movement. But the recent transfer of 5,000 ETH signals a change in that long-held position.

Of the transferred tokens, 1,500 ETH was deposited to a centralized exchange, or CEX. The holding is estimated to be worth about $3.45 million.

Exchange deposits are typically interpreted as a sign that a sale may follow. Still, it has not been confirmed whether the tokens were actually sold. The purpose of the remaining 3,500 ETH transfer is also unknown.
