Retail investors’ Bitcoin deposits to Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, have fallen to their lowest level in years.

CryptoQuant analyst Darkfost wrote on X, formerly Twitter, on Nov. 3 that retail Bitcoin deposits on Binance had hit a multi-year low. He added that the average deposit size from small investors has been declining steadily since 2018.

According to Darkfost, just 281 Bitcoin in deposits of less than 1 Bitcoin were transferred to Binance over the past 30 days. That is about one-tenth of the 2,700 Bitcoin recorded during the 2019-2021 bull market.

Darkfost pointed to the emergence of spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds as a key reason for the drop in retail deposits. Spot ETFs offer retail investors a simple way to gain exposure to price moves without the security risks of holding Bitcoin directly.

He also said tighter regulation in the U.S. and Europe may have pushed investors toward financial products such as ETFs by making access to cryptocurrency exchanges more complicated. Some retail investors may also have chosen to hold Bitcoin for the long term rather than respond to short-term price swings.

Still, Darkfost said the sharp decline in retail deposits is not necessarily a positive signal. Current deposit volumes are too small to affect the broader market.
