Anthropic is buying gas generators on a large scale to secure electricity for its data centers.

Bloomberg reported on November 9, citing the Financial Times, that Anthropic signed a $3.4 billion contract to secure gas generators for data centers. The deal is the largest known single purchase of power-generation equipment by an AI developer.

In late September, Anthropic took over a contract to buy large generators with total capacity of 1.7 gigawatts from OnePWR Solutions, a San Antonio, Texas-based power equipment supplier. It did not acquire OnePWR Solutions itself.

Anthropic had initially pursued a plan to receive electricity from OnePWR Solutions. It later changed course and instead moved to secure directly the Caterpillar generator orders held by the supplier.

The transaction highlights how AI companies are moving directly into the energy industry to secure the power equipment needed to run data centers. With supplies of power equipment limited, the strategy is aimed at obtaining generating capacity directly rather than going through intermediary suppliers.

Anthropic has so far relied on outside partners for power, semiconductors, data centers and site acquisition. As demand for AI infrastructure surges, the company is broadening its strategy to tighten direct control over core equipment.

Anthropic has previously said it plans to spend more than $895 billion over the coming years. Most of that investment is earmarked for AI computing costs and related infrastructure.
