Summary

  • As former Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney is set to become the new Prime Minister, the possibility of Bitcoin adoption is drawing attention.
  • Carney has previously made friendly remarks about Bitcoin, raising interest in potential changes to virtual asset policies.
  • The virtual asset industry is watching closely to see how Carney's election will influence Canada's approach to Bitcoin and virtual assets.

On the 9th (local time), Canada's ruling Liberal Party elected former Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney as its new party leader. Carney is expected to take over as Prime Minister next week. In the past, he has made friendly remarks about Bitcoin (BTC), drawing attention to Canada's potential moves regarding virtual assets (cryptocurrencies).

In the Liberal Party leadership election, former Governor Carney secured more than half of the votes, defeating former Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland, former House Speaker Karina Gould, and former MP Frank Baylis to become the next party leader.

Canada has adopted a system where the leader of the majority party serves as Prime Minister. Accordingly, the new leader Carney will be officially elected and inaugurated as Canada's 24th Prime Minister later this week, succeeding Justin Trudeau.

Immediately after his election, Carney said at the Rogers Centre in Ottawa where the voting took place, "We made this country (Canada) the greatest country in the world, and now our neighbor (the United States) is trying to take it from us." He continued, "That cannot happen," asking, "Who is ready to stand up for Canada?"

Meanwhile, with Carney's election, the virtual asset industry is paying attention to his friendly remarks about Bitcoin made in 2021. Previously, he responded to Tesla CEO Elon Musk's post about 'never selling Bitcoin' by saying, "Welcome Musk's decision. We need a new payment system that is resilient, high-performance, and carbon-free," tagging Bitcoin.
