Summary

  • Lee Jae-myung stated that his top priority, if elected, would be to review the economic situation.
  • He emphasized that recovery of livelihoods and economic revitalization are more urgent tasks than reform.
  • He indicated that in international affairs, he would devise practical negotiations and policies focused on the interests of the people.

According to industry sources on the 2nd, Lee Jae-myung, the Democratic Party of Korea’s presidential candidate, said, “If I am elected president, I believe the very first order should be to review the economic situation,” adding, “The most serious issue right now is the livelihood of the people.”

At a press conference held that day at Seongnam Jumin Church in Seongnam City, Gyeonggi Province, Lee responded to a reporter’s question about what his first directive as president would be after inauguration by stating the above.

Lee also responded to a question concerning judicial reform, stating, “Although there are many tasks in various sectors that require reform, right now, the urgency of economic and livelihood recovery outweighs reform.”

When asked about future international relations, particularly with ‘strongman’ leaders such as Trump of the United States, Lee commented, “The reason they are called ‘strongman’ is because they pursue leadership that prioritizes their own country’s interests,” adding, “Whether it is a security crisis or an economic crisis, we must develop practical negotiations and policies that put the people’s interests at the center.” He added, “I don’t think we will be particularly lacking in this regard.”
