Summary

  • Democratic members of the US House of Representatives recently expressed strong dissatisfaction with the SEC's lack of technical support and opaque provision of information.
  • The SEC clarified that it provides equal support to all lawmakers regarding bills related to virtual assets.
  • The House Financial Services Committee announced plans to clarify the regulatory roles of the SEC and CFTC this week through discussions on the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act.

As discussions among policymakers regarding virtual asset (cryptocurrency) bills in the United States intensify, some Democratic lawmakers have criticized the actions of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

According to The Block, a media outlet specializing in virtual assets, on the 3rd (local time), some Democratic House members pointed out that SEC staff who attended a recent tech support meeting failed to properly answer even basic questions and even provided written materials only to the Republican side. One lawmaker described the meeting as "the worst technical support experienced in Congress."

The SEC immediately offered an explanation. An SEC spokesperson told the press via email, "We provide equal technical support to any member who requests it, including bills related to virtual assets."

Meanwhile, the House Financial Services Committee is scheduled to hold a hearing this week to discuss the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act (CLARITY). The bill, proposed by Republican Committee Chair French Hill, aims to clarify the roles of the SEC and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) and to establish a regulatory framework accordingly.
