Summary

  • The US House of Representatives is at an impasse over the passage of key crypto bills.
  • Negotiations were stalled as some Republican lawmakers demanded the addition of a CBDC ban clause.
  • The schedule for subsequent procedures and additional votes remains uncertain.

The US House of Representatives has hit a deadlock in the process of passing key crypto (virtual asset) bills that were targeted for approval this week.

According to The Block on the 16th (local time), the House completed the first procedural votes for three crypto bills that day, but the second round of voting soon came to a halt, delaying the approval of the bills.

This marks the second instance of a bill processing delay this week. The Republican Party had originally dubbed this week 'Crypto Week,' planning to process all three bills as a package. However, the negotiations stalled after some Republican lawmakers demanded the inclusion of a clause barring central bank digital currencies (CBDC) in the market structure bill known as the CLARITY Act.

Meanwhile, no additional votes were reportedly scheduled for the day. Eleanor Terrett, host of Crypto in America, shared on X that "Representative Tom Emmer said there are no further votes planned tonight on the House floor. Nine Republican lawmakers voted against the bill, with three still yet to vote," adding, "What happens next in the process is still uncertain."
