Summary

  • Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin reported that 50% of stakers support increasing the Layer 1 gas limit to 45 million.
  • He stated that the current gas limit for Ethereum is already on the rise, now at 37.3 million.
  • Raising the gas limit would increase the per-block throughput, potentially enhancing the network's processing capability.

Attention is focused on whether Ethereum (ETH)'s gas limit will be increased.

On the 21st (KST), Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin announced on X (formerly Twitter), "50% of stakers have voted in favor of raising the Layer 1 gas limit to 45 million," adding, "the gas limit is already increasing, and it is currently 37.3 million."

In Ethereum, gas is the basic unit for measuring the computing power needed to process transactions. Each block has a gas ceiling that limits the number of transactions it can handle. If the gas limit is raised, the throughput per block increases, improving the Layer 1 network's processing ability.

The Ethereum network's recent gas ceiling increase occurred last February, when it was adjusted from 30 million to the current 36 million, and before that, in 2021, it was raised from 15 million to 30 million. The gas limit on Ethereum can be increased if more than 50% of validators agree.

Discussions to increase the Ethereum network's gas limit have continuously emerged within the community since last year. Through an AMA session this January, founder Buterin officially suggested raising the gas limit, and in March, Ethereum core developer Eric Conner also launched the 'pump the gas' project.
