Summary

  • It was reported that the adoption of virtual assets in the United States is rapidly expanding from younger generations to those aged 40 and above.
  • In particular, it was stated that middle-aged and older adults are actively studying and investing in virtual assets for inflation hedging and retirement planning.
  • However, platform complexity still remains an issue to be addressed, and the expansion among older generations is assessed to be a factor that could stimulate demand for virtual asset investment.

A recent survey found that the adoption of virtual assets (cryptocurrencies) in the United States is rapidly spreading from younger generations to middle-aged and older adults. However, the complexity of platforms remains a challenge that needs to be addressed.

On the 26th (Korea Standard Time), BeInCrypto, a media outlet specializing in virtual assets, cited a Crypto School survey, reporting that over 28% of new learners of virtual assets in 2024 were aged 40 or older. This represents an increase of 9 percentage points compared to the previous year (19%).

Among respondents aged 40 and older, 39% cited retirement planning as the reason for learning about virtual assets, while many also mentioned studying virtual assets as a hedge against inflation.

Nevertheless, the complexity of virtual asset platforms was pointed out as a problem.

In fact, the proportion of middle-aged and older virtual asset owners in the United States turned out to be higher than the global average. According to the survey, Generation X accounted for 37% of virtual asset holders in the U.S., significantly surpassing the average of 13% in other countries.

Ran Neuner, CEO of Crypto School, explained, "While the younger generation were the early adopters of virtual assets, now those aged 40 and older are showing active interest for their financial future."

The media evaluated that "the expansion of adoption among middle-aged and older adults could further stimulate demand for virtual asset investment."
