Summary

  • Professor Sean Stein Smith said the adoption of stablecoins will accelerate alongside the popularization of AI agents.
  • Stablecoins, recognized for collateral safety and cost efficiency, are essential for AI agents' real-time payment and reward structures.
  • He said that traditional financial institutions are already using stablecoins, and predicted that stablecoin adoption will be essential as AI-based public infrastructure expands.

There are opinions that the introduction of stablecoins (virtual assets whose value is pegged to fiat currency) will be accelerated by artificial intelligence (AI) agents.

On the 8th (Korea time), according to Forbes, Sean Stein Smith, a professor at the City University of New York, argued, "For AI agents and automated bots to become widespread, a medium of exchange with low volatility and immediate payment capability is needed," and "stablecoins are more suitable than virtual assets (cryptocurrencies) such as Bitcoin (BTC)."

Specifically, Professor Smith highly evaluated the collateral safety and cost efficiency of stablecoins. He said, "Stablecoins are issued based on real-world assets such as the U.S. dollar or short-term government bonds, and can be used efficiently for on-chain payments," and predicted, "As AI agents require real-time payment and reward structures, stablecoins will become an essential element."

Professor Smith explained that traditional finance (TradFi) is also a medium that could accelerate stablecoin adoption. He said, "AI agents are currently used among consumers, but the forces that actually drive the market are traditional finance," and predicted, "These institutions are already utilizing stablecoins, so applying them to AI agents' reward systems is only a matter of time."

He also emphasized, "Demand for AI-based automation is increasing in public infrastructure such as electricity, water, and waste management," and "Expanding stablecoin adoption is an essential element for this."
