Three years after the collapse of the virtual asset (cryptocurrency) exchange FTX, trials of key figures are still ongoing. While former FTX co-CEO Ryan Salame is pursuing a plea agreement, his wife Michelle Bond's alleged illegal political funding is emerging as an issue.
On the 23rd, the crypto-focused outlet Cointelegraph reported that the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York (SDNY) will hold an evidentiary hearing for Bond this week. Prosecutors allege Salame provided approximately $400,000 (about 50 million won) of FTX funds to Bond's campaign.
Bond was indicted last August on four counts, including conspiracy to use illegal campaign funds.
Former co-CEO Salame was sentenced in October 2024 to 7 years and 6 months in prison on charges of providing illegal political funds and conspiring to operate an unlicensed money transmission business, and is currently serving his sentence.
