Summary

  • It was reported that China will begin implementing export controls on high-grade lithium-ion batteries and synthetic diamonds from the 8th of next month.
  • The move is said to be in response to the U.S. administration's imposition of high tariffs, and both items are reported to be critical to advanced industries.
  • As a result, it said there is a possibility of increased supply chain instability in related sectors, and investors need to be cautious.

On the 13th (Korea time), Hong Kong's Ming Pao reported that, following rare earths, China is also planning to implement export controls on high-grade lithium-ion batteries and synthetic diamonds.

The outlet said, "China has prepared export control measures on the two items in response to the Trump administration's imposition of high tariffs," adding, "these are expected to take effect from the 8th of next month."

Lithium-ion batteries are an essential power source widely used in smartphones, laptops, electric vehicles, power tools, medical devices, and renewable energy storage. Synthetic diamonds have the same properties as natural diamonds while being cheaper, so they are used not only in advanced semiconductor chip manufacturing but also for polishing ultra-hard materials and in laser optics.
