Summary

  • The Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) said it has launched XRP and Solana (SOL) options trading for the first time.
  • Major institutional traders participated in the first trades, and these are expected to be used as risk management and hedging tools.
  • "These options will further strengthen institutions' strategic virtual asset investments," CME said.

The Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) has for the first time launched options trading linked to XRP and Solana (SOL) perpetual futures.

According to CoinDesk on the 15th (local time), CME officially began trading XRP and SOL futures-based options on the 13th (local time). The first trades were executed with participation from major institutional traders such as Wintermute, Galaxy, Cumberland DRW, and SuperState.

As a result, CME users can now trade daily, monthly, and quarterly expiry options on XRP and Solana futures. Options are derivatives that grant the right to buy or sell an asset at a predetermined price at a specific time, and they are used as risk management and hedging tools in the highly volatile cryptocurrency market.

Giovanni Vicioso, head of CME's virtual asset products, said, "As the market matures, investors are increasingly seeking risk management and investment opportunities through a wider range of digital asset products," and "these options will further strengthen institutions' strategic virtual asset investments."
