Summary
- US spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded net outflows of $707 million, the largest exodus in the past two months.
- Large ETFs led the institutional outflows, including BlackRock’s IBIT ($355.23 million) and Fidelity’s FBTC ($287.67 million).
- Analysts attribute the move to macroeconomic uncertainty and geopolitical risks, prompting institutions to reduce positions and pull capital for short-term risk management.

About $707 million flowed out of spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) in a single day, marking the largest net outflow over the past two months. As risk-off sentiment across global financial markets strengthened again, selling pressure appears to be spreading across crypto ETFs broadly.
According to data compiled by TraderT on the 22nd, total net outflows from US spot Bitcoin ETFs came to $707 million as of Jan. 21 (local time). This was the biggest daily outflow in the past two months, indicating broad-based redemptions centered on major ETFs.
By product, BlackRock’s IBIT posted the largest net outflow, with $355.23 million leaving the fund. Fidelity’s FBTC also saw $287.67 million in outflows, underscoring a notable retreat of institutional capital.
Elsewhere, net outflows were confirmed at $25.87 million from Bitwise’s BITB, $29.83 million from ARK Invest’s ARKB, $3.8 million from Valkyrie’s BRRR and $11.25 million from Grayscale Bitcoin Trust’s GBTC. By contrast, VanEck’s HODL recorded a $6.35 million net inflow, suggesting some defensive buying. There were no flow changes in Invesco’s BTCO, Franklin’s EZBC, WisdomTree’s BTCW and Grayscale Mini Trust’s BTC.
Market participants see institutional investors scaling back positions as Bitcoin’s price volatility picked up near key technical support levels, compounded by macroeconomic uncertainty and geopolitical risks. With outflows concentrated in bellwether products such as IBIT and FBTC, analysts say the redemptions likely reflect short-term risk management-driven withdrawals.
