Study Mode at the Level of a Private Tutor Released

"Everyone Will Have a Global Brain"

OpenAI unveiled ChatGPT’s study mode on the 29th (local time), designed to support academics. When introducing study mode, OpenAI explained, “It was created to help students not just complete tasks but truly learn, through participation and interaction.”

By using study mode, ChatGPT uses the Socratic method and self-reflective prompts to guide students to discover learning content on their own. Features include 'personalized support', which evaluates the student's skill level, asks tailored questions, and remembers previous conversations, as well as 'knowledge check', which provides quizzes and open-ended questions. For example, when a student is studying game theory, ChatGPT might ask, “What do you think game theory is?” and give feedback on the student’s response. ChatGPT prompts the user with questions at every step, encouraging step-by-step learning.

OpenAI plans to roll out study mode for all users within a few weeks.

Sam Altman, founder of OpenAI (pictured), has repeatedly stated that artificial intelligence (AI) will fundamentally change the current education system and that AI technology can serve as a one-on-one private tutor. His position is that “AI systems will become extremely personalized and serve as a global brain that anyone can easily use.” For this reason, Altman has declared that he will not send his own children to college.

The newly released study mode marks the first attempt to realize this vision. OpenAI is reportedly developing visual materials for complex or lengthy concepts, goal setting and progress tracking, and personalized research tailored to each student’s skills and objectives.
